Super Eagles goalie was thought to be a short fix for the Amakhosi but registered himself as a goalkeeper to reckon with in at the club
Daniel Akpeyi will not be at Kaizer Chiefs next season, the club has confirmed.
Akpeyi’s current contract is set to expire at the end of June with the club not willing to renew it amid the growth of new and younger goalkeepers.
The former Chippa United goalkeeper hasn’t been in favour since he returned from the 2021 AFCON in Cameroon and last played for the club in December last 2021.
Having been signed to replace Itumeleng Khune for a short term in 2019, Akpeyi turned the tides and helped the team to impressive performances.
“Goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi will also leave the Club, with his contract set to expire on 30 June 2022. The Nigerian international signed mid-season from Chippa United in 2018/19 and featured 69 times in 3.5 years for Amakhosi Farewell and good luck!” the club said in an update on Twitter.
Akpeyi played 69 times for Amakhosi and kept 27 clean sheets.
At 35, he’s regarded as experienced and may be looking at other clubs or the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) to settle his future.
