Ex-Super Eagles goalie confident of Awoniyi’s chances in at Nottingham Forest

The Nigerian coach believes Awoniyi has what it takes to succeed in the English top-flight

Former Super Eagles goalkeeper Ike Shorunmu believes Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi has what it takes to succeed at his new club, Nottingham Forest.

Awoniyi left German Bundesliga side Union Berlin to newly-promoted Premier League side Nottingham Forest for a club-record fee of £17.5million.

The Super Eagles star makes a return to the English top-flight after his unsuccessful time at Liverpool where he failed to play because of work permit issues.

However, Shorunmu who is the Super Eagles goalkeeper coach believes that despite the change in environment, Awoniyi has enough to succeed at Nottingham Forest.

“It’s a good move for the player (Awoniyi) as well the Eagles team,” Shorunmu told the PUNCH.

“We hope he makes a good start to his career and score goals for his team. The life in England is different from Germany and it’s a fresh start for him.”

Shorunmu is not the only one who believes in Awoniyi’s talent, as colleague Victor Osimhen also came out to show support for the 24-year-old.

The Super Eagles star scored 20 goals in 43 appearances for Union Berlin last season, and he would look to replicate that with his new employers.
