Super Eagles star Ademola Lookman scored the opener for Leicester City, but Bruno Guimaraes’ brace ensured that Newcastle United ran out 2-1 winners against the Foxes.
The Foxes traveled to St. James in high spirits after their 2-1 triumph against PSV Eindhoven in midweek. The Magpies also needed to continue with their winning momentum after their victory against Newcastle last week.
Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers deployed Lookman in a three-man attack for the Foxes while Kelechi Iheanacho dropped to the bench.
The Foxes were dominant from the start, and it took them 15 minutes to go in front, as Lookman received a nice pass from Ayoze Perez to score his second goal in consecutive Premier League games.
However, just eleven minutes later, Guimaraes restored parity for the home side. Nonetheless, Leicester saw more of the ball, but Newcastle looked more deadly as they recorded five shots in the first half.
The second half saw few chances, but Newcastle still looked very dangerous. Lookman was taken off for Harvey Barnes in the 66th minute, while Iheanacho was introduced for Patson Daka in the 78th.
However, nothing concrete came out of those substitutes.
Unfortunately for Leicester City, Guimaraes put a dagger in the chests in the final seconds of stoppage time. The Portuguese star got on the end of a rebound and headed the ball in the net to give Newcastle the 2-1 victory.
