Chukwueze suckerpunch sends Bayern out of UEFA Champions League

A late Chukwueze finish did the damage for Villarreal as they sent Bayern packing.

Samuel Chukwueze scored in the 88th minute to condemn Bayern Munich to yet another disappointing UEFA Champions League exit.

The Nigerian was on hand to score from a counter attack by the Yellow Submarine to send the German giants out of Europe’s elite football competition.

Robert Lewandowski gave Bayern Munich a glimmer of hope in the 52nd minute when he gave Bayern Munich the lead. The Bavarians laboured to find the all-important second goal but failed at finding the vital winner.

The Bavarians’ profligacy stood to threaten their chances of progression as they were only able to get four of their 23 shots in the game on target.

Villarreal’s stout defending proved to be an adversity for the Germans as they struggled to break down the Spaniards at the Allianz Arena.

Chukwueze came on in the 84th minute and delivered the suckerpunch four minutes after replacing Francis Coquelin.

The goal stands to be the winger’s biggest career goal yet in a Villarreal career that’s filled with ups and downs.

It’s Villarreal’s first semifinal placement in 16 years as they haven’t made it to the last four of the Champions League since losing to Arsenal in 2005.

Chukwueze is the only Nigerian remaining in the Champions League and has had two highly successful European adventures.

Recall that Villarreal qualified for the Champions League on the back of a successful Europa League campaign.
