Super Eagles star’s club cuts ties with investors

Super Eagles midfielder, Alex Iwobi’s Everton teammate Vitalii Mykolenko has received the club’s full solidarity in a tough period for Ukrainians.

Everton on Wednesday announced that it has severed ties with its Russian investors – USM, Megafon and Yota. All three companies have Uzbek-born Kremlin-linked billionaire, Alisher Usmanov at their centre.

On Tuesday, the EU banned Usmanov from conducting business in Europe and froze his assets throughout the continent.

Usmanov has close ties with Everton majority shareholder, Farhad Moshiri and his companies have significant investments in the Toffees.

The Everton Stadium, to be opened in 2024 had USM holding one of its stadium naming rights to the tune of $40m.

Megafon and Yota are also sponsors of the Everton women’s team, as clubs in Europe move to severe their Russian ties before sweeping sanctions affect them.

Earlier today, reports making the rounds suggested that Chelsea owner, Roman Abramovich is putting the club up for sale up to the tune of £3.6bn. The Russian oligarch is believed to be backed by the Kremlin and may have some of his businesses affected.

He transferred the control and administration of Chelsea to its Foundation in a bid to prevent far-reaching sanctions.

Chelsea have had Super Eagles stars like John Mikel Obi, Victor Moses and Kenneth Omeruo on their books in the past.
