Simy reveals why he left Salernitana for Parma

The Super Eagles star took a downward step when he left Serie A side Salernitana for second-tier side Parma, and he has shed light on the reason for his decision

Super Eagles striker Simy Nwankwo has revealed that he decided to join Italian Serie B side Parma because of their rich history.

Simy joined newly-promoted Serie A side Salernitana on a one-year loan deal from Crotone last summer. However, he struggled to perform for the Garnets.

The big striker was one of the most potent strikers in the Italian top-flight last season, scoring 20 goals in 38 appearances. But his performances this season have been disappointing.

Simy had a meagre return of one goal in 19 Serie A games for Salernitana, who are swimming in relegation waters.

In the January transfer window, the Nigerian then decided to end a miserable time at the Arechi Stadium, moving to Serie B side Parma for the rest of the season.

It was a big step downward for Simy as Parma are struggling with life in Serie B. The Crociati currently sit 13th in the Italian second tier, four points off relegation positions.

The Nigerian star has come out to justify his decision, stating that he chose to move there because of their history.

Since I was young and started watching Serie A, Parma were one of the most important teams in the history they have,” Simy said via Parma’s website.

“From Africa, we watch the Premier League more, but history says that Parma are one of the great teams I have followed since I was young. And now I have the opportunity to come here and play with these great champions.”

“When there was this possibility, I wanted to escape right away and come here. It was a very great opportunity, and I’m happy about it,” he added.

Simy already made his debut for Parma, but he was unable to find the back of the net. Nevertheless, he would look to help the Crociata secure promotion to the Serie A.
