“It’s really working” – Former Liverpool signing praises Augustine Eguavoen’s Super Eagles style

The Nigerian national team smashed three goals past the Falcons of Jediane and they could have had more on a fine evening in Garoua

Union Berlin striker Taiwo Awoniyi has credited interim coach Augustine Eguavoen for the Super Eagles’ impressive displays in Cameroon.

Awoniyi was among the goal scorers as Nigeria dispatched Sudan 3-1 at the Stade Omnisports Roumde Adjia, Garoua, in a matchday two clash of the ongoing 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.

The Super Eagles could have had more goals with Awoniyi, Aribo, and Iheanacho missing several scoring chances. Such was the dominance of the three-time African champions that a 6-1 scoreline would not have flattered them.

But Eguavoen’s men had to settle for a win decided by Samuel Chukwueze’s opener, Awoniyi’s fortuitous header, and Moses Simon’s emphatic finish.

With an energetic and attacking performance that mirrors the display against record champions Egypt, the Super Eagles have fully emerged from the conservative, defend first days of former head coach Gernot Rohr.

Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria after the encounter, Awoniyi confesses his delight at helping the Eagles claim a second consecutive entertaining win at the Afcon.

And the former Liverpool signing is convinced Rohr’s replacement, Augustine Eguavoen, should take the plaudits for the team’s impressive style of play.

“It was a sweet victory and we are very happy that we were able to make our country, our families as well as all Nigerians proud.

“We still have a long way to go in the competition although and I think the style of our coach in giving the boys more freedom to express themselves in the field of play is really working for the team.”

Nigeria, boasting six points from two games, are through to the next round of the Afcon.

The 2013 champions will finish top of Group D should they avoid defeat against Guinea-Bissau on Wednesday, January 19.
