The three-time continental champions made Afcon 2021 record with the victory over the African Wild Dog
Former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria Goodluck Jonathan has sent his well-wishes to the Super Eagles after the team’s record-making win over Guinea-Bissau on Wednesday.
Coach Augustine Eguavoen’s men ended their group stage campaign with a 2-0 win over Guinea Bissau on Wednesday, making them the only team at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations to record nine points in the group stage.
Despite the interim head coach ringing eight changes to the team that defeated Egypt and Sudan, the Super Eagles were still the better side for the most part.
Although they could have had more, second-half goals from Almeria’s Umar Sadiq and vice-captain William Troost-Ekong were enough to power Nigeria to their third win on the trot.
And Goodluck Jonathan, who was president when Nigeria last lifted the Afcon Cup in 2013, is impressed with how the Eagles have fashioned out the victories.
The elder statesman took to his official Twitter account to charge the team to keep up their momentum while aiming to win the coveted trophy.
His tweet reads: “Well done @NGSuperEagles for advancing to the knockout stage of #AFCON2021. This is a clear demonstration of the Nigerian resilient spirit. I wish them more victories in the games ahead and urge them to sustain this momentum as we aim for the ultimate prize.”
Three wins out of three take Nigeria to nine points, confirming their superiority in a group with three former champions of the competition.
The Super Eagles will next face the third-placed team in Group E or F in a round of 16 clash on Sunday, January 23.
