Ex-Belgium international believes Golden boot award does not guarantee Onuachu a big move

Ex-Belgium International Wesley Sonck has expressed his disappointment that Genk hitman Paul Onuachu has not moved to the Premier League.

Still, he believes that Onuachu’s Golden boot award would not change things. Onuachu rewrote history when he became the first Nigerian to win the Belgian Golden boot.

The Super Eagles forward scored a whopping 33 goals in the Belgian Jupiler League last season to end as the highest goal scorer.

This season, he has continued with his brilliance, scoring twelve goals in eighteen appearances. And if not for injuries, he probably would have scored more.

However, despite his exploits, he could not seal a move away from the Smurfs last summer despite links to Arsenal, West Ham and Lyon.

And so far in the January transfer window, he has only been linked with a move to Fiorentina, although the move comes with a caveat.

Sonck, who received the Golden boot award during his playing days at Genk, believes that Onuachu has done enough to get a Premier League move but states that the Golden boot would do nothing to aid a big move.

“I think it’s a shame that Onuachu still plays in Belgium. A boy like me, 1 meter 75, who can score a goal, in a manner of speaking you will find 1,000 clubs after me in Europe, Sonck told HLN as per Voetbalkrant.

“But like Onuachu, who is taller at 2 meters 1, there are not up to five. Certain teams will be able to use Onuachu, such as West Ham. Onuachu wouldn’t look out of place with that.”

“Moreover, he is already 27, while I was 23 when I won(Golden boot), so he is sitting in the best period of his life. But I don’t think such a Golden Shoe really opens doors.”

“Abroad, the Golden boot does not matter much. The best player in Spain or Germany is okay. But not the one from Belgium. There, they are not concerned about the Belgian Golden boot.” He added.

Onuachu is currently out with a hamstring injury, but he will look to prove a point when he returns.
