Just In: NFF appoints Portuguese tactician as the new Super Eagles coach ahead of AFCON 2021

The organisation has appointed a permanent replacement for the sacked Gernot Rohr ahead of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has appointed Portuguese tactician Jose Peseiro as the new coach of Nigeria’s Super Eagles.

The NFF announced Peseiro’s as the new boss of the three-time African champions in a memo sent out on Wednesday evening.

The statement read: After careful consideration of a memo presented by Chairman of the Technical and Development Sub-Committee Ahmed Yusuf Fresh, the Executive Committee endorsed a proposal for the appointment of Mr Jose Peseiro as the new Head Coach of the Super Eagles.

However, the Committee resolved that Mr Augustine Eguavoen, named the interim Head Coach, will lead the Super Eagles to the AFCON 2021 in Cameroon with Mr Peseiro only playing the role of Observer.

It was unanimously agreed that the AFCON is a good avenue for Mr Peseiro to launch a working relationship with Mr Eguavoen, who will revert to his role as Technical Director (hence Mr Peseiro’s immediate boss) after the AFCON.

Peseiro replaces Rohr, who was sacked as the team’s coach earlier this month after more than five years in charge.

Eguavoen had been appointed as the interim boss and had already named a 28-man squad for the Africa Cup of Nations, which starts on January 9 in Cameroon.

But as stated in the memo released by NFF, the former Gent defender would leave his role after the competition, with Peseiro taking full charge.

Peseiro’s first mission as the Super Eagles boss is to ensure the team qualifies for the Qatar 2022 World Cup, even though he will be with the team during the AFCON.

The Portuguese tactician takes over as Nigeria’s coach after leaving his role as the coach of the Venezuelan national team due to unpaid wages.

He began his coaching career at União Santarém before spells at União Montemor, Oriental and Nacional. The 61-year-old also served as Carlos Quieroz assistant at Real Madrid between 2003-2004.

Peseiro has also had the opportunity of managing three of Portugal’s biggest clubs in Porto, Sporting Lisbon (2x) and Braga (2x).

  • NFF will regret their actions soon. Is the new coach better than Eguavoen? What is the achievement of the new coach? Has he ever won anything yet?
Since they don't value our own because of their corruption then they should be ready for the worst soon but NFF will definitely regret this.

Amunike, Egbo and Finidi are more qualified to be the new Super Eagles coaches but we all know that no transparency in the NFF DNA. We are watching you so closely NFF . God bless Nigeria!!!

  • Another heartbreaking for me, because I was expecting Jose Mourinho or Amunike to be the new coach but non of them. If Nigeria must win AFCON again there must be a very good coach with coaching experience and discipline and I don't think neither Austine nor peseiro possess those qualities aforementioned.

  • NFF has made another wrong call and decision to hire the Portuguese.

Equavon aka Cerezo, is more than capable to deliver. If we need a high profile coach then we should go for one not this unknown element.

  • Hi Nigerians and Africans,
When will African currencies stop flying out of the continent?
Can Africa countries not save or prevent money leaving the continent by employing our own to couch our teams?
Whch club or country in Europe is or has an African couched or is couching?
    Thanks
