Iheanacho matches Milner’s feat but City too strong for Leicester

The Nigerian international was brilliant after earning a rare start, but it was not enough to prevent the Foxes from another loss

Ademola Lookman scored one goal, while Kelechi Iheanacho scored one and assisted two, but their efforts were not enough as Machester City beat the Foxes 6-3 on Boxing day.

The Foxes had a week to forget after going down to a heartbreaking penalty loss against Liverpool on Wednesday.

But they hoped to get back on track when they travelled to the Etihad to face a strong Manchester City side.

It was always an uphill task for the FA Cup Champions, considering the Guardiola tutored side’s indomitable form.

The Citizens had won ten of their last eleven games, while Leicester had just one victory to show in their previous five fixtures.

As expected, Machester City bossed the possession from the blast of the whistle, trying to carve out the volatile Leicester City defence.

It did not take too long before they got rewarded for their efforts, courtesy of  Kevin De Bruyne’s accurate curler in the fifth minute.

It became two minutes later as Riyad Mahrez scored from the penalty spot after Aymeric Laporte was taken down in the box.

Even with a two-goal cushion, Machester City did not stop pushing, and in the 21st minute, Ilkay Gundogan made it three for his side.

Things got worse for Brendan Rodgers men after Youri Tielemans committed another foul in the box. Raheem Sterling did not take any prisoners, as he finished calmly from the spot for City’s fourth.

The first half scoreline could have been more disgraceful but for the efforts of Schmeichel in goal for Leicester City.

However, in the second half, it looked like Leicester City had gotten a proper hairdryer by gaffer Brendan Rodgers as they came out all guns blazing. Just fifteen minutes after the break, Leicester City cut the deficit as they scored two goals.

Iheanacho assisted the goals from James Maddison and compatriot Ademola Lookman, and it looked like the Foxes were going to stage a comeback.

Then in the 65th minute, Iheanacho scored again to make it 4-3, and with 25 minutes left, Leicester were dreaming.

However, their hopes of a comeback ended after Aymeric Laporte capitalised on their poor defensive set-up to make it 5-3.

In the 87th minute, the Citizens wrapped up their marvellous performance as Sterling struck his second of the day to secure a 6-3 victory for the Foxes.

But despite the loss, Iheanacho had a great game. He became the third player to score and provide an assist in a single Premier League game against Man City after previously playing for them in the competition.

This feat had only been achieved by Paul Dickov for Leicester in 2003 and James Milner for Liverpool in 2016.
