‘I think he’s holding back’-Austin Eguavoen on Leicester City star Wilfred Ndidi

The 56-year-old tactician is a big fan of the Foxes midfielder, but he believes the Nigerian international can still do more

Super Eagles interim boss Austin Eguavoen believes Leicester City midfielder is on his way to becoming one of the best defensive midfielders in the world, but he needs to take more risk.

Ndidi has made a name for himself since he joined Leicester from Genk in January 2017. The 25-year-old has taken his game to the next level and is regarded as one of the best defensive midfielders in the Premier League.

Ndidi is one of the most important players under Brendan Rodgers in the Foxes squad. The Nigerian is the glue that holds the team together, offering protection to the back four while also breaking up the opposition’s attacking play.

At the international level, Ndidi’s performance has been key to Nigeria’s success in recent years. This display has not gone unnoticed with Eguavoen, who believes the Nigerian has what it takes to be one of the best in his position.

“When I see Ndidi in the midfield, not 100% Oliseh, but I think he is on his way to becoming one of the best defensive players in the world,” Eguavoen told ATHLST.

However, despite praising Ndidi’s qualities, Eguavoen believes the 25-year-old is too cautious and needs to express himself more.

“But he’s holding back as far as I am concerned,” Eguavoen added.

“He’s got a lot to still give, but I think he is holding back.”

“I have spoken to him once or two occasions,” the ex-Sunshine Stars coach added.

Ndidi is expected to be part of Eguavoen’s Super Eagles squad for the Africa Cup of Nations, which kicks off in Cameroon on January 9.
