Nigerians abroad: Dele-Bashiru, Bassey strike in wins

Two significant games involving two Nigerian stars were played in the Czech Republic top-flight and the English Championship, with Soccernet.ng bringing the highlight of the actions

Nigerian forward Fortune Bassey was the hero as he grabbed the brace that inspired České Budějovice to a come-from-behind 3-2 win at home to Slovacko on Saturday.

Slovacko, second behind champions Slavia Prague on the Czech Liga table, raced to a two-nil lead at the Fotbalový stadion Střelecký Ostrov.

But Valenta halved the deficit for the home side in the 72nd minute before Bassey fired two goals in the final nine minutes to complete the turnaround for David Horejs’ men.

Bassey’s double is his fourth goal in his last three games for České Budějovice and his eighth goal in 16 league matches.

In the second-tier of English football, Tom Dele-Bashiru was on the scoresheet as Swansea and Reading played out a five-goal thriller at the Swansea.com Stadium.

The former Nigerian youth international equalised for the visitors in the fourth minute moments after Paterson had given the home side an early lead.

Reading’s Carroll and Swansea’s Manning traded goals either side of the break before Danny Drinkwater’s 50th-minute effort secured a 3-2 victory for the Royals.

On loan from Watford, Dele-Bashiru is enjoying a good run in the Reading first team, with the 22-year-old netting four goals In 18 Championship games.
