Gernot Rohr gives reasons for Super Eagles unimpressive displays

The Nigerian national team sneaked into the World Cup playoffs after managing a point against Cape Verde on Tuesday

Gernot Rohr has blamed the Super Eagles’ unconvincing displays in recent games on the absence of key players due to injury.

Nigeria qualified for the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup playoff rounds after earning a win and a draw on matchday five and six to finish top of Group C.

The Super Eagles delivered an unimpressive display on Friday, needing two penalties to beat Liberia in Tangier, Morocco.

And on Tuesday, an even unconvincing Super Eagles were held to a 1-1 draw by Cape Verde and were lucky to avoid conceding a late goal to the Blue Sharks that would have denied the West Africans a qualification ticket.

Leicester City midfielder Wilfred Ndidi returned to the Eagles starting eleven after a spell with injury. At the same time, former Manchester United loanee Odion Ighalo came back from international retirement to start against Cape Verde.

Villarreal winger Samuel Chukwueze did not make it off the substitute bench at all in both games after recovering from a lengthy layoff.

And Rohr is convinced that the unavailability of his key men affected the performances of his team. And the German tactician believes that the Super Eagles’ display will improve before the African Cup of Nations in January.

“After this group stage, we can be optimistic. Now we have the time to prepare for the AFCON,” Rohr told the media.

“Some of our players are coming back from injury – [Wilfred] Ndidi, [Samuel] Chukwueze. They were not really in the rhythm of the competition, so let’s give a little time to our players, and the team will be better and better.”

The Super Eagles open their Cameroon 2022/Afcon campaign with a tough-looking tie against Egypt on January 11.

The three-time continental champions take on Sudan four days later before finishing their group campaign with a tie against Guinea-Bissau on the 19th.

  • Let rohr choose his 1st eleven among the set of players invited to camp .let nff allows me to choose my own eleven to play competitive game with rohr eleven . My team wil beat rohr set with 4 goals to zero. .... Call me on +971 564505138 . This is a challenge. Al ikh fc technical adviser.

    • How many players do we have in a team? Rory should stop making unnecessary excuses and throw in the towel. He is not competent to handle a national team.

  • As for me, I will reserve my comment on Rohr because whether we all like it or not this present NFF under Mr. Melvin Pinnick is ready to sink or rejoice with the coach even though we the true supporters of Super Eagles know that this man Rohr is not capable in true sense of it in take us to the desire level we all crave to achieve. This NFF will never listen to the voice of reasoning and do as Ghana has done until the team sink ( I pray it will not happen) and mark if it happens they will adduce foolish reasons why they fail to sack him at this time hence the best thing is to watch and see how it will end. Also, the 2021 AFCON in Cameroon will surely expose him (Rohr and NFF) further. He Genor Rohr is asking for more time for Osihmen and Ighalo to jell together; they will have two weeks before the Nation Cup and fortunately, it is one of the possible opponent Egypt that we will meet first. I want to hear what Rohr will tell the press after the match if the result did not go our way and what NFF under Melvin Pinnick will say there after. NFF should take note patriot Nigerians are waiting and watching events with great interest and attention. A stich in time saves nine. Either find a way to ease Rohr out of the picture now or find a good technical assistance to support him if you dont want to sack him. Note Nigerians will not excuses for failure at the forth coming AFCON in Cameroon. Over to you NFF to do serious re-thinking at the forth-coming AGM meeting taking place in December and come out good communique that benefit Super Eagles and football in general because our under-age football teams and the NPFL league are completely dead under your leadership Mr. Melvin Pinnick (We are keeping records of your stewardship since you took-over almost 8 years ago. You have less than a year to either redeem the rots you created or be condemned after your tenure. God bless Nigeria.

  • The whole team spirit is low. Not like Super Eagles I used to know as boy. From coaching crew, captain to all the players. Except for one man. Victor Osimhen. Ahmed Miss used to play with a lot of speed and energy but ever since he became captain those qualities has deserted him. Not anymore. I pray for that our team. Right now, Super Eagles is just a shadow of Itself. That’s my opinion about what is wrong with that our team. All of them has been around each occasionally for more than a year. Why can’t they play good attacking football from defense to attack. They play with fear, lack of confidence and low energy. JUST RETROGRESSING EACH TIME!!!

  • The man is a liar. Even if all the needed players are available and injury free, Nigeria will not be at the World Cup with that coach. He is not technically good and does not know what he is doing. Please, get away with that coach if we want to see progress in Super Eagles. Be warned!!! That guy is not a coach.

  • am not surprised at all, pinnick is a disagree to his tribe, his regime as nff president have cos Nigeria alot of shame but surely he will regret it,football is something some1 shld be passionate abt,is not all abt selfish interests just to make money for yourself and ur family but I want pinnick and co to rethink they ve family name to protect. u dnt need to knw much abt football Rohr is poorer Nigeria coach we ever had,is shame pinnick, sack rohr will cos nff 2m dollar,as useless as he is,wat a contract

  • Pinick is making a lot of money on the super eagles and Rohr is his accomplice and they have formed a syndicate.
Nigerian football is in a mess right now . All thanks to Amanju pinick.
