Victor Osimhen delivers another MOTM performance as Super Eagles star’s double sinks Sampdoria, sends Napoli to Serie A summit

Fresh from netting his first Serie A goal of the season in the 4-0 spanking of Udinese, the Nigerian international got the ball rolling once again for the Neapolitans in another fantastic showing

Napoli returned to the top of the Italian Serie A table after Victor Osimhen scored twice in a 4-0 thrashing of Sampdoria at the Stadio Comunale Luigi Ferraris on Thursday.

Osimhen’s troubles at the start of the season are now firmly in the past as the Super Eagles striker netted his second and third league goals of the campaign in another convincing away victory.

An early red card at Venezia prevented Napoli’s record buy from featuring against Genoa before he was kept quiet in the win over Juventus.

But the cobwebs were cleared with a brilliant brace versus Leicester City in the Europa League, and Osimhen followed that with the opening goal at Udinese on Monday.

And he continued from where he left off in Udine with the opener yet again in Genova after just ten minutes.

Osimhen took the ball off the hosts’ defense and sent it to the left for Insigne. He continued his run and showed incredible awareness to outwit Sampdoria’s Colley to get on the return pass from the Napoli captain and guide the ball into the net despite the best efforts of goalkeeper Audero to keep it from crossing the line.

Osimhen had the ball in the net again in the 21st-minute after beating the home side’s goalie to a through ball from Anguissa, but it was ruled out for offside.

But Napoli would not be denied their second goal moments before the halftime break, as Spanish midfielder Fabian Ruiz doubled Il Partenopei’s advantage with a sweet strike from outside the area. 

Five minutes after the interval, it was three-nil to Napoli courtesy of that youngster again: Osimhen.

Zielinski fed a simple pass to Lozano close to the area. The Mexican found Osimhen with a low cross, and the in-form forward placed a firm shot past the hapless Udinese goalkeeper to claim his third goal in five league games. 

Still, Luciano Spalletti’s men wanted more, and the scoreboard soon read 4-0 after Zielinski’s left-footed shot from the centre of the box nestled in the bottom right corner of the net.

Napoli remain the only team with a perfect win record in the Italian top-flight. Aside from Thursday’s convincing win, the Neapolitans have forced defeats down the throats of Venezia, Genoa, Juventus, and Udinese.
