Super Eagles midfielder leaves Wydad Casablanca

Super Eagles Midfielder Michael Babatunde has left Morrocan club Wydad Casablanca after three wonderful years at the club.

The midfielder refused to sign a contract extension at the expiration of his contract at the end of June.

Babatunde has been more of a journeyman for a significant part of his career. He played for three different clubs in the Ukrainian league- Kryvbas Kryvyi Rih, Volyn Lutsk, Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk.

The Nigerian international spent two years in each club except Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk, where he spent just a year before returning to Africa, Raja Casablanca in 2015.

Babatunde joined Wydad in 2018 from Qatar FC for about $1.5m. But his time at the club is over after three years.

The 28-year-old, who is loved by the fans at Casablanca, wrote on his Instagram handle, “These years in Wydad Casablanca have been excellent.

“None of this would have been possible without the club’s support. Special thanks to the fans, my teammates, the club staff, to the coaches who had confidence in me and allowed me to grow as a player.”

“However, I believe that the time has come for a new chapter in my career. To the fans, you have been fantastic in the last three years. It has been an exciting one for me in the city of Morroco.”

“To everyone at Wydad, Goodbye and thank you. Wydad will be forever in my heart. Keep the flag flying.”

In his three years stint at the club, the talented midfielder won the Botola Pro and also got to the finals of the CAF Champions League, where his side lost out to Esperance.

Babatunde is known for his ability to control football games. He has excellent ball control, though not the best dribbler.

The 28-year-old scored 13 goals and provided ten assists in 58 games for Wydad.

The former Heartland player represented the Super Eagles at the 2014 World Cup under late Stephen Keshi.
