Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting was delighted by the victory of the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon versus Nigeria’s Super Eagles on Friday.
The Lions won 1-0 via Andre Anguissa’s 37th-minute goal inside the Wiener Neustadt Stadion, 46 kilometres from the Austrian capital Vienna. It was the end of a winning streak for Nigeria against the Lions who had not won since the 2000 Africa Cup of Nations final.
It was the first of two warm-up games for both teams ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying second-round matches as well as the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations.
Bayern Munich forward Choupo-Moting, who was a second-half substitute due to back pain, enjoyed the win. He was a member of the squad when they lost 4-0 to Nigeria in Uyo during the 2018 World Cup qualifiers as well as the 3-2 loss during the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.
“We took the game seriously because we played against a tough opponent, a big game against a big rival. It was important for us to show our preparations, and I’m happy we won,” Choupo-Moting told DW.com.
The 32-year-old who just signed a two-year contract extension at the Bavarian club side said it would be great for the Lions to host and win the 2022 AFCON in front of their fans in Yaounde.
“It is an honour to play the Nations Cup at home. It is a special thing for the whole nation, and we want to go as far as possible. We have a good squad, and we’re a big football nation. It will be something special to celebrate the title in our nation, but it is still far away, and we have to prepare for it.”
Both teams will play the second friendly on Tuesday at the same arena. Stay with Soccernet.ng to bring you to live text commentary of the game.
