More Problems For Gernot Rohr Ahead of Nigeria’s AFCON Qualifiers

The German tactician has been forced to deal with three withdrawals from his squad due to injuries and Covid-19, but that’s not the end

Kenneth Omeruo is the latest player who will not link up with the Super Eagles team due to Covid-19 restrictions.

Omeruo has not been permitted to travel by his club Leganes, which rules him out of Nigeria’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against the Benin Republic and Lesotho.

Leganes refused to let Omeruo travel as a guard against coronavirus. Their decision comes after fellow Spanish second division side, Almeria, denied Umar Sadiq the chance to make his debut for Nigeria.

Super Eagles manager Gernot Rohr has now been forced to call-up Adeleke Adekunle as a replacement for Omeruo.

Omeruo and Sadiq are not the only players whose clubs have denied them the chance to link up with the Super Eagles squad.

Clubs in Ligue 1 and 2 confirmed that they wouldn’t be releasing players to countries outside the European Union in this international window due to the coronavirus pandemic.

This decision led to the withdrawals of Moses Simon and Terem Moffi, who was actually on the standby list. It remains to be seen if more players are denied the chance to travel by their clubs.
