The former Midtjylland striker has found it difficult to force his way into the Super Eagles team, but he has nothing to prove according to the ex-international
Former Nigerian star, Mutiu Adepoju has urged Super Eagles manager Gernot Rohr to find a way to involve Paul Onuachu in his plans.
Adepoju said this in an interview with Soccernet, adding that the 26-year-old has already proved himself at club level.
Onuachu is arguably Nigeria’s best player in Europe this season having scored 19 league goals in 20 league appearances for Genk in the Belgian top-flight.
But despite his brilliant displays at his club, Onuachu has had limited appearances at international level with Rohr saying the striker does not fit into the team’s style.
The Genk attacker only played once in the Super Eagles four games last year and was even called up as a replacement.
However, Adepoju insists it is time Rohr find a way to take advantage of the striker’s prowess in front goal instead of sidelining him.
“Well, I don’t think Paul Onuachu have anything to prove, he has been proving it at his club”, Adepoju told Soccernet.
Adepoju admits every coach has his philosophy but urges Rohr to be flexible in his approach.
“The coach can find a way for him to fit into the game, the coach should not be rigid.”
“If a player is scoring, the good thing is to look for a way of taking advantage of that and adapt into the team,” the former Real Sociedad star concluded.
Onuachu could get his chance when Nigeria take on the Benin Republic in their 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in March.
