The Argentine legend is the greatest star ever in the La Liga Santander, and he has now matched Pele’s record as the player with the most goals for the same club
Lionel Messi got Barcelona’s equalizer in their league tie at home to Valencia, with his header late into the first-half the forward’s 643rd goal for the Camp Nou giants.
That goal sees Messi equals the number of goals scored by Brazilian football icon Pele for Santos, a record that had been in force for the best part of a century.
Mouctar Diakhaby headed Valencia in front on the half-hour mark, and the visitors could have doubled their lead from one of many opportunities created against Ronald Koeman’s side.
But Barcelona were thrown a lifeline shortly before the break when the referee awarded a penalty after Antoine Griezmann was adjudged to have been pushed from behind in the penalty area.
Messi’s spot-kick was saved by the opposing goalkeeper, but the ball found its way back to the skipper, who then headed the ball into the net – a landmark goal by all accounts.
