The Super Eagles have been hit with another blow after one of Nigeria’s foreign-born stars has followed the footsteps of the likes of Tammy Abraham, Fikayo Tomori, and Bukayo Saka in choosing to feature for a European nation
Germany’s boss Joachim Low has extended a first-time invitation to Nigerian descent Felix Uduokhai ahead of the German national team’s upcoming matches against the Czech Republic, Ukraine and Spain.
Uduokhai has been one of the standout performers in the Bundesliga this term, helping Augsburg maintain a bright start to the campaign.
Only four clubs have a better defensive record than the Fuggerstädters, who have risen to sixth on the table, after winning three and drawing one of their first six league matches.
Uduokhai has been crucial to that impressive run, with the 23-year-old featuring in all six matches and scoring one goal in the 2-0 defeat of Borrusia Dortmund back in September.
The centre-back, born to a Nigerian father and a German mother, has seen his impressive performance caught the eye of Nigeria’s German head coach Gernot Rohr.
The former Bayern Munich defender had played his part in convincing Hoffenheim defender Kevin Akpoguma to switch his international allegiance from Germany to Nigeria. And Rohr had expressed hopes of pulling the same move on Uduokhai.
But Die Mannschaft have won the race for the defender’s allegiance, and he will likely make his competitive debut for the former European and World champions when Low’s side take on the Czech Republic in a friendly match in Leipzig next Wednesday.
He could also feature in Germany’s Uefa Nations League games against Ukraine and Spain on November 14 and 17 respectively.
