“Gernot Rohr’s Method Is Dangerous” – Former Nigeria Coach Lambasts Super Eagles Boss

The German tactician is known for constantly changing and chopping his team, but one former Nigerian international faults that method

1980 African Cup of Nations winner Christian Chukwu is not impressed that Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr has failed to create a solid first eleven for the Nigerian senior national team.

Rohr has been in charge of the three-time African champions since 2016, leading the side to qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup and finish in third-place at the 2019 AFCON in Egypt.

However, four years since his appointment, the Super Eagles have no substantive goalkeeper and have fullbacks and wingers regularly rotated.

Former Kenya coach Chukwu insists that Rohr’s frequently inviting new players to the Super Eagles’ team does not bode well for the African giants.

“Gernot Rohr has no excuse not to have built a solid regular 11-man squad that will play matches for the country regularly,” Chukwu told the Guardian.

“He cannot keep joking with Nigerians by going around different countries, selecting players from various leagues to play for the country in different competitions. There should be a standing team.

“His current method is dangerous. How do you expect the Eagles to play beautiful football like the old Green Eagles and the 1994 Eagles when the players don’t even know themselves and the style of play. It is also not right that there is no home-based player in the national team.

“Rohr needs to develop our national team by building a solid squad and stop going around the world scouting for players, which has not yielded any positive result.”

Rohr, though, continues to meet targets set by his bosses at the Nigeria Football Federation, with the German gaffer guiding the Super Eagles to the top of their Afcon-qualifying group.
