Just days after guiding Trabzonspor to winning the Turkish Cup as caretaker coach, Eddie Ikem Newton has been confirmed as the permanent manager of the Black Sea Storm.
Trabzoñspor have announced the appointment of former Chelsea midfielder Eddie Newton their new manager after the former Chelsea coach inspired the club to their first trophy triumph in a decade.
Newton, who is of Nigerian descent, joined Trabzonspor earlier this year as assistant manager to former boss Hüseyin Çimşir.
Cimsir, however, left last month shortly after Trabzonspor lost the Turkish League title to Istanbul Basaksehir.
Newton then took over as the caretaker manager of the six-time Turkish champions. In his first game in charge, Newton led the side to a morale-boosting 2-1 win at Kayserispor, after the league title-chasing side had gone three games without a win.
And in just his second match, the former Roberto Di Matteo assistant guided them to a 2-0 victory over Alanyaspor in the Turkish Cup final last Wednesday.
As a player, Newton spent nearly a decade at Chelsea playing as a defensive midfielder and winning the FA Cup and the UEFA Cup Winner’s Cup.
In 2012, Chelsea hired him as the assistant head coach to manager Di Matteo, together with whom he won the FA Cup and UEFA Champions League trophies.
It’s a brilliant time for Nigerian-born managers abroad, with former Super Eagles goalkeeper Ndubuisi Egbo making history after leading FK Tirana to Albania League success last month.
