Super Eagles Star Ready To ‘Fight’ To Avoid Relegation

The resumption of the Spanish Primera Division will bring about different hurdles for different clubs, but for Leganes, the primary focus will be trained on staying up among the elites

Super Eagles defender Kenneth Omeruo has declared his readiness to fight that the Cucumber Growers may retain their La Liga status at the end of the campaign.

Before football was suspended in Spain nearly three months ago due to the coronavirus pandemic, Leganes were in big trouble.

Coach Javier Aguirre’s men were deep in relegation waters, having won just five of 27 matches and losing 14 of them.

However, a rare away win in their last match at Villarreal back in March lifted them to only three points from safety.

La Liga is set for a cautious return next week, and Omeruo is confident that his side can avoid relegation if they are focused enough to fight for it.

“Now we will play without our fans at home, so we have to be more focused,” the 2013 AFCON winner said, as quoted by La Vanguardia.

“Our targets will surely be the same. We have to push for them.

“We have the opportunity to avoid relegation, and we will fight to achieve it.”

19th-placed Leganes face Valladolid next week Saturday in a game set to be played behind closed doors.

And even though he’s still a bit behind schedule fitness-wise, Omeruo is hoping to be ready to pick his 20th appearance of the campaign.

The former Chelsea defender said: “Physically, I still have a little (more work) left to do, but I will be ready for the game against Valladolid.

“Mentally, I am activating my head because now La Liga begins. That is already 100% confirmed, so that you have to work hard to be ready.”
