CAF Makes A Final Decision On AFCON 2021

There’ve been doubts over the prospects of having the tournament in 2021, and the Confederation of African Football has taken a decision

The 2021 Africa Cup of Nations scheduled for January/February has now been postponed for a year, CAF has announced.

The decision comes after the coronavirus outbreak affected the football calendar this year. There are still four rounds of qualifiers left including the third round that was postponed last March.

With the September international dates already cancelled, CAF was left with no choice than to shift the tournament for a year.

Last year’s edition in Egypt was played in June/July, but due to Cameroon’s rainy conditions in the summer, CAF decided to move the 2021 tournament back to its original period.

Although following the coronavirus, it was expected that CAF would move the 2021 edition to the summer period. However, in a CAF executive meeting on Tuesday morning, it was decided it should be postponed for a year.

The latest decision is set to affect Africa’s football calendar, including the qualifiers for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
