Speaking Spanish Helped Me Get Along With United Teammates – Odion Ighalo

The Nigerian forward has enjoyed a brilliant start to life at Old Trafford, and he has revealed that getting along with other United players has been crucial to that.

On-loan Manchester United striker Odion Ighalo has disclosed that he speaks Spanish and that helped him to get familiar quickly with Juan Mata, David De Gea, and Sergio Romero, which made him felt comfortable in the United dressing room.

Ighalo is often viewed from the prism of his three-year spell in the Premier League with Watford, but before joining the Hornets, the former Super Eagles ace spent nearly four years at Spanish side, Granada.

During his time with the Rojiblancos, the 30-year-old not only banged in 17 league goals, but he also got fluent speaking Spanish.

Knowing how to communicate in Spanish has come in handy on his return to England as it warmed Ighalo into the hearts of the Spain internationals in the United squad.

Speaking to fans during an Instagram live Q&A session, he was asked which players he felt closest to.

Ighalo said: “I have a lot of guys there who have helped me.

“The guys in the dressing room are very good guys. The first time I stepped my feet in that dressing room – wow. There are two or three players that took me and made me feel welcome and comfortable.

“After two or three days, we started living like brothers, like I’ve been there for five years, laughing together and cracking jokes together. Especially Juan Mata, De Gea, and the other goalkeeper Romero, because they speak Spanish and I speak Spanish.”
