Contract Renewal: NFF Must Fulfill Its Promise- Rohr

The German manager is optimistic that he will continue as the Super Eagles head coach when his contract expires in the summer, but the NFF has a lot to do in monetary terms.

The coach of the Nigeria national football team, Gernot Rohr, has debunked rumours that he is stalling on signing a new contract so that he could take up an appointment with another African country.

The former Bordeaux tactician is a well-known man on the continent, having managed Gabon, Burkina Faso and Niger before taking the Super Eagles job in August 2016.

He has since helped the three-time African champions qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup and also led the team to a third-place finish at the 2019 African Cup of Nations championship.

These feats have raised the 67-year-old’s credits on the African football scene, but Rohr insists it is not his style to go into an agreement with another when he still has a running contract with an employer.

Rohr is aware that the NFF is facing financial constraints in honouring its obligations towards him, a situation which could have been avoided if the federation was in tune with the Sports Ministry.

“They (NFF) are trying their best to honour my contract, but it is very difficult, and it is still very difficult for them to honour it,” Rohr told Sports Extra.

“It’s not the money problem, my father told me, and I always tell it to my children, ‘if you promise, you must do it.’

“The real problem I think the NFF has, this is the first country I see here in Africa where the sports ministry and the federation are not working together, in the other countries, I was paid by the sports ministry, they paid me.

“I had the contract with the NFF and the sports ministry, here the NFF has to find alone the money to pay all the things,” Rohr added.
