Following a string of impressive performances for Kaizer Chiefs in the Premier Soccer League, Nigeria goaltender Daniel Akpeyi has claimed the Player of The Month award in South Africa.
Super Eagles goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi has been voted the best player in the Absa Premiership for the month of September/October after his fantastic displays helped the Amakhosi’ maintained their hold at the top of the the South African league.
Akpeyi, who was in goal when Nigeria recorded back-to-back victories over Benin and Lesotho last fortnight, was drafted in to Kaizer Chiefs starting eleven following injury to first choice goalie, Itumeleng Khune.
However, the 33-year-old has established himself as the Amakhosi’s first choice goalie and made his 9th league appearance on Wednesday night in Kaizer Chiefs 4-0 away win against Stellenbosch FC at the Cape Town Stadium.
Surprised to win the individual award, the Nigeria international was quick to appreciate Kaizer Chiefs’ technical team for their support.
“It is (award) a big surprise to me, but it also shows the importance of putting effort forward in whatever you do. I give credit to the technical team who have been patient with me,” Akpeyi told a news conference on Thursday.
“I’m settling in, I’m taking each game as it comes. Khune is a good keeper, I’m just grateful for the opportunity from the coach. It’s a healthy competition in that department [goalkeeping]. I’m just happy to be improving all the time.”
Kaizer Chiefs manager, Ernst Middendorp was also named coach of the month for September/October.
