Sergio Aguero netted a brace after Nicholas Otamendi scored the opener to help the Citizens sweep past Southampton 3-1 in the EFL Cup at the Etihad.
The two Argentina internationals were the heroes on Tuesday night as Manchester City booked their place in the next round of the EFL Cup with a convincing 3-1 defeat of struggling Southampton.

Manchester City dominated the first half and deservedly took a 2-0 lead over Southampton into half-time. Pep Guardiola’s men piled the pressure on from the first whistle but didn’t break the deadlock until the 20th minute when Otamendi rose highest to head Silva’s cross into the back of the net.
Aguero then doubled the lead before the break when he tapped the ball into the empty net from close range. It could’ve been more, but Saints goalie McCarthy made some good saves to deny Mahrez, Foden and Angelino.

However soon after the restart it was 3-0 City. Mahrez’s shot from outside the box took a big deflection off Bednarek and it looked like McCarthy had it covered until Aguero just managed to get his studs to the ball to send it past the goalkeeper and over the line.
Southampton had suffered humiliation since getting thrashed 9-0 by Leicester City last weekend but they finally had something to cheer about with the game running to end.
With a quarter of an hour left on clock, Jack Stephens pulled one back for the visitors. The Saints defender’s movement in the box to get ahead of Angelino was great as he once again got on the end of Ward-Prowse’s cross. This time he headed his effort over Bravo and into the back of the net to make it 3-1.
But there was to be no dramatic comeback as City masterfully saw at the match to record yet another victory on home soil.
