Tammy Abraham was yet again on target, claiming the opener and his eighth goal of the season, as Chelsea defeated Lille on Matchday 2 of the Champions League but his performance has only fetched him strong warnings from the club’s manager.
Blues boss has cautioned Tammy Abraham, who scored on his 22nd birthday on Wednesday night, to keep up his good form or risk losing his place to the other strikers in the team.
Former Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud was on the bench in Lille after recovering from a brief illness that had kept him out of the squad in their last match. Chelsea also have Michy Batshuayi who grabbed a brace in his last start as the Blues thrashed Grimsby Town 7-1.
But Tammy has continued to enjoy his senior team run ahead of his older teammates and while Lampard is pleased with the 22-year-old’s output, he has warned that any drop in form will likely see him benched.
‘Tammy’s performance was more of the same. He’s hungry for goals, he’s physical, he gives everything for the team and he has quality when the ball is at his feet,’ Lampard told Chelsea’s website as monitored by Soccernet.ng.
‘Of course, there’s improvement to be had but he’s showing that. The minute Tammy’s levels drop, then we look next to Giroud and Batshuayi, and can they come in and make a difference.
‘We will see many more Champions League goals from him I hope, and many more performances like tonight.’
