Paul Scholes reveals why United will achieve nothing this year and next

Paul Scholes believes that Ole Gunnar Sokskjaer’s Manchester United will struggle to achieve meaningful success as long as the team’s senior players continue to let others down by their poor performances.

The Red Devils legend vented his fury after watching his former side laboured to another lame draw at Southampton.

The Red Devils took an early lead at St Mary’s through Daniel James’ third goal of the season, but their advantage disappeared when defender Jannik Vestergaard equalised in the second half.

The hosts were reduced to 10 men when Kevin Danso was sent off in the 73rd minute, but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side were unable to find a winner as they dropped points for the third game in a row.

Solskjaer continues to show faith in youngsters such as Andreas Pereira, Scott McTominay and summer recruit James but former United midfielder Scholes said it is the more experienced stars who have failed the younger ones.

“I am disappointed,” Scholes told Premier League TV after the match, Soccernet.ng reports.

“But it wasn’t the young players I was disappointed with, it was more the experienced players.

“When Matic came on he constantly gave the ball away, Ashley Young gave the ball away, I don’t know how many times Paul Pogba lost possession.

“These are the people that young players are looking up to, the examples you’re looking at.

Over the summer, Solskjaer brought in defenders Harry Maguire and Aaron Wan-Bissaka for multimillion dollar deals but Scholes still cannot see Manchester United mount a serious title challenge any time soon.

“I think you almost have to write United off for the next two years, this team,” he added.

“Until Ole Gunnar has cleared everything he wants out, has four or five transfer windows, United are going to be behind Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea and Tottenham .

“I think this is United at the minute, you have to be patient with the young players, but the experienced players have to step up.

“We’ve seen over and over again how many mistakes experienced players are making, it’s difficult for young players to come into a team like that.”

Saturday’s result meant that United have not won a match since the 4-0 victory over Chelsea on the opening weekend of the season.
