Liverpool star deletes Twitter page after fans blame him for Napoli loss

Some Liverpool fans have still not gotten over the team’s 2-0 loss to Napoli on match day 1 of the UEFA Champions League and have held Andy Robertson responsible, forcing the full back to shut down his social media account.

Andy Robertson has deleted his Twitter page after fans abused him for giving away a penalty last night against Napoli.

With the game poised delicately at 0-0, Napoli’s Jose Callejon went down under Robertson’s challenge late on to win a penalty from which the hosts broke the deadlock.

However, replays showed that VAR had not done it’s job well as Callejon had effectively thrown himself to the ground in opportunistic fashion.

But Liverpool fans stuck to their beliefs that the Scotland international should be held responsible for the game’s first goal and in effect the harsh loss.

Liverpool legend and fan Mark Lawrenson even wrote in his BBC Sport match reaction,

“I am far from convinced it was a penalty for Napoli’s first goal – the first time I saw it, I thought it was the correct decision, but the more I see it the less I agree it should have been given.

“But it was still a lazy challenge by Andy Robertson on Jose Callejon, which gave the referee the opportunity to award a spot-kick in the first place.”

Liverpool fans in their droves besieged the defender’s Twitter page raining abuses and curses on him, forcing Robertson to delete the account.

Robertson is widely considered to be one of the best left-backs in the world, due to his pace, energy, and crossing ability.

The Scotland captain played an integral part in a Liverpool backline that conceded just 22 goals in the league last term – the best record in the division. Alongside this, Robertson also notched up 11 assists in 36 Premier League games last season.
