Full FC Barcelona 2016/2017 summer transfer breakdown
The 2016/2017 summer transfer window will be remembered as one of the best windows for FC Barcelona. The club were very active in the transfer market after coming from a transfer ban in the previous two windows. They brought in six new players whilst sending the ones not in use out of the club.
One of the reasons Barça had a spell when they were not getting the the results towards the end of last season was due to fatigue. Coach Luis Enrique had no good means of rotations and when injuries hit the team, they fall. The club noticed this and decided to embark on one of their most active summers in their recent history, strengthening all positions by bringing in 6 quality players to the side. Here is a breakdown of the club’s transfer business in the first window of 2016/2017, the ins and outs, expenditures and revenue, ages and everything.

PLAYERS BARÇA SIGNED 2016/2017

FC Barcelona signed a total of 6 new players for the 2016/2017 season.
DENIS SUAREZ
Position: Midfielder
Age: 22
Nation: Spain
Transfer fee: €3.25 million
Contract: 4-year contract until June 30, 2020
Signed from: Villarreal

Barcelona announced the return of Denis Suarez to the club in July, the players spent the last two season on loan at Villarreal and Valencia and Barça exercised their right to buy him back after they saw he’s developed into a great player.
LUCAS DIGNE
Position: Left back
Age: 23
Nation: France
Transfer fee: €16.5 million plus €4M in variables
Contract: 5-year contract until June 30, 2021

Barcelona surprised its fans by signing Lucas Digne as there were no saga or speculations strongly linking him to the club. The club saw that Adriano Correia was on his way out of Camp Nou and brought in a strong competitor for Jordi Alba in the left back spot and he has already shown that.
SAMUEL UMTITI
Position: Central defender
Age: 22
Nation: France
Transfer fee: €25 million
Contract: 5-year contract until June 30, 2021
Signed from: Lyon

FC Barcelona signed Samuel Umtiti for 25 million Euros from Lyon and it looks like it will turn out to be the best deal of the window. With the departures of Marc Bartra and Thomas Vermaelen, Barça brought it Umtiti who has already proven to be top quality and fitting to Barça’s style.
ANDRE GOMES
Position: Midfielder
Age: 23
Nation: Portugal
Transfer fee: €35 million plus €20M in variables
Contract: 5-year contract until June 30, 2021

According to reports, Barcelona signed Andre Gomes from Valencia just when he was on the verge of signing for closest rivals Real Madrid. It seemed like the Portuguese was bound to join Zidane’s men but couldn’t resist a call from Barça and hence made a U-turn, signing a 5-year deal and becoming Barça’s first Portuguese since Deco.
JASPER CILLESSEN
Position: Goalkeeper
Age: 27
Nation: The Netherlands
Transfer fee: €13 million plus €2M in variables
Contract: 5-year contract until June 30, 2021

At last Barça have a player from Holland. Barcelona announced the signing of Ajax and Netherlands first choice goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen after it was confirmed that Claudio Bravo was heading to Manchester City. The goalkeeper didn’t hesitate to join and will serve as competition for first choice Marc Andre Ter Stegen.
PACO ALCACER
Position: Striker
Age: 23
Nation: Spain
Transfer fee: €30 million plus €2M in variables
Contract: 5-year contract until June 30, 2021

An unbelievable signing! After missing out on Luciano Vietto and Kevin Gameiro, Barça ended up signing Valencia captain and club emblem Paco Alcacer as their sixth and final acquisition of the summer, ending their long search for a backup striker in style. The player was announced on his birthday and will wear the colours of the Catalan club for the next 5 season.
TOTAL EXPENDITURE: €122.75M plus €28M in variables. However, the €25M paid for Samuel Umtiti was said to be part of last season’s budget, therefore, the spendings for this season alone is €97.75M.

PLAYERS BARÇA SOLD 2016/2017

FC Barcelona saw a total of 13 players leave the club in the 2016/2017 summer transfer window. It was more of a squad reshuffle and they didn’t really make much money from it.
– Claudio Bravo sold to Manchester City for €18 million plus €2M in variables

– Marc Bartra sold to Borussia Dortmund for €8 million

– Alen Halilovic sold to Hamburg for €5 million (Barça included a buyback option where they can get the player for €10M within two years)

– Adriano Correia sold to Besiktas for €0.6 million

– Thomas Vermaelen loaned out to AS Roma for €2 million with Roma having an option to buy him permanently for €8 million

– Dani Alves sold to Juventus for free

– Sandro Ramirez sold to Malaga for free

– Martin Montoya sold to Valencia for free

– Munir El Haddadi loaned out for one season to Valencia with Valencia having an option to buy him permanently in 2017 for €12M and Barça having a percentage for future sales of the player.

– Cristian Tello loaned out to Fiorentina with the Italian club having an option to buy him permanently for €8M

– Alex Song loaned out to Rubin Kazan for free

– Douglas Pereira loaned out for one year to Sporting Gijon

– Sergi Samper loaned out for one year to Granada
TOTAL INCOME FROM SALES: €33.6 million plus €2M in variables.
BUSINESS: Total expenditure – Total sale, €122.75M-€33.6M=€89.15M. Minus the €25M for Umtiti, total is €64.15M.
