Super Eagles striker, Alex Iwobi says he’s optimistic the team will qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup despite been pitted in a very difficult group.
The three-time African champions will face perennial rivals Cameroon, Algeria and Zambia for the sole ticket in Russia. Nigeria’s campaign will kick-off against Zambia in Lusaka on October in a match the team must claim the maximum points before facing Algeria at the Abuja National Stadium.
Iwobi who pledged his allegiance to play for the Super Eagles ahead of the Three Lions revealed to FIFA.com in an interview that with early preparation and player’s focus the senior national team could qualify for the World Cup.
“It is a tough group for sure, but I don’t think there are any easy groups – it’s international level competition. I’m confident we can prevail; we definitely have the players to. If we prepare well, focus and play to the best of our ability I’m sure we will qualify.
“All the teams [in the group] are good teams that have been former AFCON winners, and have players playing at the highest level, so we know we’ll be up against well-prepared teams. The Nations Cup is the biggest sporting tournament in Africa, so we were gutted. But as a team we have to look forward and focus on the World Cup and our qualification matches.” Iwobi said.
