Nigeria crashes to 59th in November FIFA ranking

The November FIFA ranking is out with Nigeria dropping seven places from the previous month and are now 12th in Africa.

Nigeria’s Super Eagles are now ranked the 59th footballing nation in the world, crashing to her lowest since April 2014, after the world governing body released the latest ranking on Thursday.

The month under review has been a mixed month for the national senior team. First it was the unceremonious exit of skipper Vincent Enyeama. Then another key player, Emmanuel Emenike, announced his premature retirement, a few days after which the Super Eagles surprisingly lost to Congo. The team then rallied to earn a convincing victory over the Indomitable Lions.

The Super Eagles are now ranked behind Cote d’Ivoire, Algeria, Ghana, Cape Verde Island, Senegal, Tunisia, Cameroon, Congo, Guinea, Congo DR and Egypt, despite defeating Cameroon 3-0 in their last international outing in Belgium.

While the likes of Chad, Sao Tome & Principe and Turkmenistan improved their standing remarkably, Nigeria find herself fall from 52nd to 59th.

Cote d’Ivoire are now the new number one in Africa having dethroned Algeria. Ghana are third while Cape Verde Island surprisingly climb to fourth, leaving traditional heavyweights like Senegal, Tunisia, Cameroon and Egypt chasing their tail.

Overall, Belgium are now the new world leading side after Eden Hazard and co negotiated a near-perfect Euro 2016 qualifying series, overtaking world champions Germany. Messi and Argentina complete the top three.

Chile, Copa America winners, climbed four places to fifth spot having enjoyed an impressive run that has seen them unbeaten in 8 months.

Nigeria will have the chance to improve their current standing when they face Swaziland (ranked 130th) in the 2018 FIFA World Cup second round qualifier later this month.
