The Genk striker has received criticism from Super Eagles fans, but Gernot Rohr insists he will keep on inviting the 25-year-old.
Onuachu made his Super Eagles debut in an international friendly match against Egypt back in March. It was a brilliant debut, as he scored the lone goals in that encounter.
However, he has failed to convince since then. Although he was included in the Super Eagles squad that finished 3rd at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, he came in for criticism from fans over his poor performances in the competition.
But despite the criticism, Rohr insists Onuachu is the future of Super Eagles. The former Bordeaux manager says Onuachu will continue to get an invitation because he offers what other strikers don’t have.
“In some matches, you need long balls to go forward because you don’t have the luxury of time to construct the ball from the back, it can be interesting to have a tall player not just in the offence, but to also defend the ball.”
“Like we did in the AFCON against Cameroon, we brought in players with heights. “It is interesting to have all these tall guys but it is true that the football we play we do that on the ground.
“It is difficult for Onuachu that’s why somehow he did not play the AFCON qualifiers against Benin and Lesotho, but he is a good player.”
The 25-year-old is having a good season with his club Genk however. Onuachu has scored seven goals in 15 league appearances for De Smurfen.
