The Nigerian U20 women’s football team will leave for Colombia on August 18 to compete in the 2024 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup, Soccernet.ng reports.
This year’s tournament marks the first time 24 teams will participate, with Nigeria, Morocco, Cameroon, and Ghana representing Africa.
The tournament, scheduled from August 31 to September 22, will be hosted across four venues in three Colombian cities: Bogotá, Medellín, and Cali.
In Bogotá, matches will be played at Estadio El Campín and Estadio El Techo. The Estadio Atanasio Girardot in Medellín and the Estadio Pascual Guerrero in Cali will also host games.
The Falconets, who have been training in Abuja since July 7, are placed in Group D alongside Germany, Venezuela, and the Korea Republic.
The team has a strong track record, having qualified for every edition of the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup and reaching the finals twice, finishing as runners-up to Germany in 2010 and 2014.
As part of their preparations, the Falconets will play international friendly matches in Colombia upon arrival. The group stage draw for the tournament is as follows:
- Group A: Colombia, Australia, Cameroon, Mexico
- Group B: France, Canada, Brazil, Fiji
- Group C: Spain, USA, Paraguay, Morocco
- Group D: Germany, Venezuela, Nigeria, Korea Republic
- Group E: Japan, New Zealand, Ghana, Austria
- Group F: Korea DPR, Argentina, Costa Rica, Netherlands
