Nigeria have booked their place at the 2024 FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup after beating Liberia [6-1] on aggregate in the final round of the qualifying series, Soccernet.ng reports.
Exciting Flamingos forward, Harmony Chidi netted a goal in each half to power Nigeria to a [2-0] victory over Liberia in the second leg of the final playoff.
Nigeria had last week claimed an impressive [4-1] win over their West African neighbours at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Stadium in Liberia.
Nigeria’s highest goalscorer during the campaign, Chidi scored one of Flamingos’ four goals in the first leg and opened the account for coach Bankole Olowookere-tutored girls in the return fixture on Friday evening.
The crowd coming in to watch the game inside the MKO Abiola National Stadium in Abuja had barely settled down in their seats when Chidi broke the deadlock with the first shot on target in the third minute.
Nigeria had the upper hand throughout but the Flamingos had to wait until shortly after the hour mark before Chidi doubled Nigeria’s advantage and sealed qualification for the tournament to be played in the Dominican Republic later this year.
The Flamingos impressed at the last edition of the case showpiece in India two years ago, where Nigeria won the bronze medal after beating Germany in the third-place decider.
It is Nigeria’s best outing at the U17 Women’s World Cup after three quarterfinal finishes in its five previous appearances.
