AFCON 2023: Sunday Oliseh ignores Nigeria’s draw with Guinea-Bissau, picks four-goal thriller as ‘most captivating’

The Nigerian legend was not impressed with the Super Eagles’ display against the Djurtus on Monday

Former Juventus midfielder Sunday Oliseh has offered no comments regarding Nigeria’s thrilling draw with Guinea-Bissau in the last Group A match of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, Soccernet.ng reports.

Oliseh has, however, revealed his admiration for Cape Verde’s exciting 2-2 draw with former champions Egypt in Group B’s crucial decider.

There were several goal-mouth actions and three disallowed goals involved as Opa Sangante’s own-goal gave Nigeria a slim 1-0 victory against Guinea-Bissau inside the Felix Houphouet-Boigny Stadium in Abidjan.

On the same night, hosts Cote d’Ivoire fell to an embarrassing 4-0 defeat to Equatorial Guinea, while Ghana were held to a surprise 2-2 draw by Mozambique, a result which sent the Black Stars out of the competition.

None of the games caught the fancy of Oliseh, though, with the former Super Eagles captain rather enthralled by the high tactical and entertaining value of the clash between Egypt and Cape Verde.

Cape Verde were already guaranteed the top spot in Group B after winning both of their previous games. Still, the Blue Sharks did not take their foot off the gas against the Egyptians.

Gilson Tavares gave them the lead just before halftime, and after Mostafa Mohamed and Mahmoud Trezeguet had turned the tie around for the Pharaohs, Bryan Teixeira struck late to ensure a share of the spoils.

Pleased with the action-packed encounter, Oliseh used the opportunity to applaud the quality of football on display at the continental championship.

“Wow! The Cape Verde vs Egypt encounter is definitely one of the most exciting, spirited, and captivating AFCON matches I have enjoyed. Superb advertisement for African football,” Oliseh wrote on Twitter.

Cape Verde and Egypt advance to the next round of the competition, while Ghana are sent packing after claiming two points from their games.

Nigeria also progress to the last-16 stage as Group A runners-up, with Equatorial Guinea claiming the top spot after beating Ivory Coast.
