Gernot Rohr set to hand ex-Man Utd star Odion Ighalo a shock return to the Super Eagles

The former Manchester United man retired from international duty two years ago, but he is set for a sensational return to the team

Soccernet can confirm that former Watford striker Odion Ighalo is set for a shock return to the Super Eagles squad ahead of next month’s 2022 World Cup qualifiers.

Super Eagles manager Gernot Rohr is set to name the Al-Shabab striker in his squad for the clash against Cape Verde and Liberia next month.

The German tactician and Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) president Amaju Pinnick have already spoken to Ighalo, although he has asked to talk to his club before deciding.

Should everything go according to plan, Ighalo will be in the squad for next month’s qualifiers and possibly next year’s Africa Cup of Nations.

The ex-Watford retired from international duty after Nigeria’s third-place finish at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, where he finished as the top scorer with five goals.

Ighalo scored 16 goals in 35 games for Nigeria.

  • The return of Odion Ighalo will not be a bad idea for the Super Eagles. It is a truism that you cannot buy experience and odion has it. The younger players will have the chance to learn one or two things from him. If Messi, Christiano Ronaldo and some other older players are still playing for their national teams, I don't see anything wrong in Ighalo returning to the Super Eagles. Let the Eagles convince him to play and keep him till after Qatar 2022. He will certainly add value to the attacking options of the Eagles on the big stage such as the World Cup.

  • is a good idea, because he still have some thing to offer muller is still playing at his age.

  • I totally agree with his return (Odion Ighalo)return. That team lacks experience and courage especially at this time. Not only Odion needs to be back in that team. Few ex Super Eagles are still needed in that team. For example. if Victor Moses still wants to come back he will add value to that team. Victor Moses can play that No 10 role. I have watched him recently. He is still good and has the courage, experience, and value needed.
