Onuachu Plays A Starring Role As Genk Win The Belgian Cup

The Super Eagles striker played a crucial role as the Smurfs won their fifth Beker van België and their second major trophy in three years

Paul Onuachu did not score, but he set up the winner to help Genk to a 2-1 victory over Standard Liege in the final of the Belgian Cup on Sunday night.

The Belgian Cup is a reward for Onuachu’s brilliant season with Genk. The 26-year-old has scored 29 league goals for John van den Brom’s men, while he also has two in the Cup.

With the league title almost out of reach, the Belgian Cup is the least Onuachu deserved in what has been a fantastic season.

Genk fully deserved their win and could’ve had more, but for some poor finishing. The opening half was more of a cagey affair as neither side could find the breakthrough.

However, the second half was a different story as both teams went for it. Genk took the lead three minutes after the break via an effort from Junya Ito, finishing off a ball from Theo Bongonda.

Bongonda then went from provider to scorer as he doubled Genk’s lead in the 80th-minute courtesy of an assist from Onuachu.

Standard Liege did not go down without a fight, though, and they pulled one back through Jackson Muleka Jackson Muleka in the 83rd minute.

But they could not find the equaliser and were not even helped by Moussa Sissako, who was sent off in the first minute of added time.
