UEFA Appoints Female Referee To Officiate Liverpool, Chelsea Super Cup Clash

UEFA has appointed Stephanie Frappart to officiate the Super Cup clash between Liverpool and Chelsea in Istanbul on August 14.

Frapper, 35-year-old refereed the recent Women’s World Cup final between the United States and the Netherlands in her native France.

She has previously worked in the men’s League 1 in the country and is in the pool of French referees for the coming season.

“I have said on many occasions that the potential for women’s football has no limits.

“I am delighted that Stephanie Frappart has been appointed to officiate at this year’s UEFA Super Cup along with assistant referees, Manuela Nicolosi and Michelle O’Neal,” said Aleksander Ceferin, President of the European governing body.

UEFA Referee Chief, Roberto Rosetti, said Frappart ‘fully deserves’ the opportunity of officiating the Super Cup.

  • She has been on the FIFA International Referees List since 2009
  • Frappart has refereed matches in the Championnat National, the third division of men’s football in France since 2011
  • Frappart became the first woman to referee in Ligue 2, the second tier of professional men’s football in France in 2014
  • She served as a referee at the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Canada
  • The Frenchwoman also created history by becoming the first female to referee a Ligue 1 game, the top-flight division in France, taking charge of SC Amiens and RC Strasbourg on April 28, 2019
  • Frappart was also selected to referee at the 2019 Women’s World Cup in France and was one of 11 officials that would be retained for the remainder of the tournament after the round of 16 games
  • She was appointed to officiate the Women’s World Cup final between the United States and Holland in Lyon on July 7
  • Frappart will become the first woman in history to referee a high-profile men’s game in a UEFA competition when she takes charge of the European Super Cup final between Chelsea and Liverpool on August 14
